This week at Headway Kent, our clients turned their attention to the future of money — quite literally! The proposed redesign of the UK’s bank notes sparked a fascinating and lively conversation across our groups, highlighting just how passionate and insightful our community can be.
The discussion began with a simple question: "What should the new bank note designs look like?" From there, it evolved into a wide-ranging and animated debate about the value of physical money in an increasingly digital age.
Some clients expressed excitement at the idea of new designs that better reflect the diversity and history of the UK. “It would be great to see more people with disabilities or everyday heroes on our notes,” one participant suggested. Others felt strongly about maintaining iconic figures like scientists, writers, and artists who have shaped British culture.
As the conversation developed, it took a deeper turn into the role of “real” money today. With more transactions happening online or through contactless cards, some clients raised concerns about the fading presence of cash. One client shared, “I feel safer with notes in my hand — it’s real, and I can see it. With cards, it's harder to keep track.”
Another client noted the accessibility aspect: “Not everyone is comfortable using digital devices. For some of us, cash is still the easiest and most familiar way to manage money.”
Adding a wonderfully creative touch to the session, one client even designed their own bank note — proudly featuring a unicorn. The mythical creature, complete with a glittery mane and rainbow background, was a big hit among the group and sparked smiles all around. “Money doesn’t have to be boring,” they said. “Why not make it magical?”
Staff were inspired by the quality of the debate and the way clients shared their views with thoughtfulness and respect. The session offered not only a chance to discuss an everyday topic, but also a meaningful exploration of independence, inclusion, and how modern changes affect people living with brain injuries.
“It was one of those sessions where you could see people really thinking — and feeling heard,” said a staff member. “These conversations help build confidence, and they also show just how much our clients have to contribute to wider public discussions.”
As ever, we are proud to be a space where all voices can be heard — and where the value of a good conversation is truly priceless
